Social media is more important than ever for your small business. But how can you show up and promote your brand and all that it offers without burning yourself out… or doing it wrong?
Most of all, how can you find a way to “do” social media that works for you, and helps you avoid some of the not-so-great advice and assumptions out there?
Don’t worry, sister! I’m busting some of the most common myths I hear about social media so that you can find your path to success on these platforms.
Are you ready?
Myth #1: You have to be on every platform
Do you instantly get overwhelmed at the thought of being on every social media app all the time, posting all the things? Trust me, girlfriend: you do not have to be on every platform and you do not have to spend a ton of time creating content for each one!
The trick is understanding and uncovering who your target audience is and where they are at. From there, you’ll know where to be most active and what content they like to consume!
Myth #2: You need a ton of followers
Do you have follower envy? When we see some social media accounts with tens of thousands (or maybe even millions!) of followers, we instantly assume we have to rack up those same numbers to see any major ROI from our social media.
That’s just not true, though. As the saying goes, “quality over quantity” applies to your social media, too.
How do you engage your audience and ensure that you’re building a loyal fanbase on social media?
You’ll want to use the right strategies to attract those engaged followers and reach them with the right kind of content that is going to convert them into buyers.
Myth #3: You have to create a ton of content
It’s overwhelming to think about how much content you need for Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and whatever other platforms you use. It’s a full-time job!
But not if you know the secret to social media content: repurposing.
Repurpose content that you are using elsewhere. You can use sections of your most recent blog post, quotes from your most recent podcast, or even captions you’ve used on other platforms to create new social media content.
Once you know the rules and understand what makes high-quality content for each platform, your options are going to open up. You can take original content further so you aren’t creating more work and just publishing to publish.
Myth #4: You can wing it
While there is something to be said about showing up so you have a presence on social media, you still need a plan of action.
If you don’t have a plan, you’re wasting your time.
As the saying goes, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
Having a plan and a map of your social media content is going to get you closer to your goals and convert your audience into buyers.
Without one, you’re just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
Myth #5: Social media is just for tech-savvy people
It might feel intimidating to learn a whole new social media platform or create graphics and videos that encourage people to engage with your brand.
But I promise you: these platforms are accessible to everyone. More than that, these platforms don’t have to feel like a total mystery to you.
Anyone can learn the strategies to market your business on social media, and you can play with what feels right to you and your brand.
It’s all about working smarter not harder.
