There’s a Mel Robbins quote that goes, “When it comes to change, goals, and dreams, you have to bet on yourself.”
Isn’t that so powerful?
I know that, as women business owners, we want our clients, our customers, and even our friends and family to cheer us on as we do what we’re put on this earth to do.
But sometimes… it’s you, your goals, and a to-do list. It’s time to put the rubber to the road, sister.
Of course, I can’t say all of this without referencing what’s going on in the world around us.
Right now, most of the U.S. is coming out of “quarantine” or stay home orders, and while it’s not necessarily “business as usual,” it’s not as scary as it was a couple of months ago.
With that said, and with our world changing a lot after all of this, I think it’s more important than ever to talk about goals.
Why we need them. Why we need to check in with them. And why we need to make sure our previous goals fit what we want from our lives and our businesses now.
Because let’s be real: the world can change in an instant. How we adapt and move forward is what sets us apart — both in life and business.
So I want to walk you through an exercise to help you check in with your goals any time of the year so you can make sure you’re on the right course.
Start by revisiting your goals
Where did you write down your big dreamy goals for this year, or even this quarter, or this month?
I usually write mine down in a new notebook at the start of the year, but I also have them outlined in my team’s Asana board.
Go find where you put yours, and take a look at them.
🌸 Do they feel relevant to you still?
🌸 Have you made any progress on them?
🌸 Do they still feel attainable?
🌸 Do any of them kind of scare you? (the good kind of scare!)
Assess where those “old goals” are for you, and don’t be afraid to cross off anything that just isn’t important to you or your business now.
Example: A few years ago, I had a goal to create a marketing planner. I crossed it off the list after revisiting halfway through the year because I knew I had other things that were more important to me. But that marketing planner is back on my list for 2020, and it’s definitely happening now!
All of this to say: Your goals aren’t set in stone, sister.
Identify new priorities
Is there something that has come up in the last month or quarter that has redirected your energy from those old goals… and have you looking at something new?
For me, my energy was definitely redirected when my kids’ school was canceled for the year due to the pandemic. I had to shift a few goals and priorities to make sure they were being cared for during the day.
For you, a shift in priorities might look like kids being home and having less time to work IN your business, or it could be new insights into what your customers want from you. It could be a big launch that gives you revenue to play a bit more with other offers.
Whatever it is, think about where your priorities and energy have changed.
Where are you spending your time in your life and your business? What gets you excited lately? Is it still aligned with those old goals… or is it something new?
It’s OK if it’s new. It’s OK if you don’t have the bandwidth or resources to see those original goals to completion.
Write down your new priorities, and don’t worry about making them into specific goals just yet.
Look ahead
Knowing what you know now, about your business, about how this year or quarter or month is going, and about your priorities…
Where do you want to go from here? What do you see yourself creating or accomplishing? What do you want to feel?
Even when life throws us a curveball (hello, pandemic!), we can still dream for ourselves and envision the life we want to lead.
Write down what comes up for you… or, if you’re like me, maybe it’s time for a vision board?
The world is changing... and with it comes new opportunities for your life & business.
You already know I’m here to help you build a thriving business and joy-filled life. And hopefully by now, you know that I love making things look beautiful, too.
What better way to reconnect with your goals, reaffirm new ones, and just get focused on what’s important to you now?
Whenever I reassess my goals, I also make sure to create a new vision board that reflects those changes so I can see them with my eyes.
Our brains remember what we see, much more than what we read or even write.
There are also so many studies out there touting the benefits of visualizing goals — they can help you reaffirm your daily actions (like exercising so you feel strong), and they can actually help you stop doubting yourself.
It’s like creating a vision board tells your brain, “It’s on your board, therefore it’s a priority! Now get movin’!”
Plus, you know me and I just love how gorgeous a good vision board is. It gives me all the tingly feels!
I truly believe setting measurable goals and vision boarding them is one of the secrets to my success, and I want to share it all with you.
